The International Carwash Association's 2009 Awards
Presented during the State of the Industry Address and Annual Membership Meeting at Car Care World ExpoTM 2009.

Brian Campbell Innovation Award
The presentation of the Innovation Award was a particulary special moment this year because the International Carwash Association announced a permanent change. The award was renamed after an extraordinary person, and car washing’s #1 fan, Brian Campbell.

Brian was born with a rare genetic condition known as Williams Syndrome. For some, this would only mean limitation, but Brian doesn’t let himself be limited. Starting at a young age, Brian became fascinated by car washing attending his first car wash convention at age 10. He has been with the Association every year since and regularly visits car washes with an unrivaled passion. As Brian has become a true friend to so many professionals throughout the industry and embodies the commitment, passion and spirit of so many car washers around the world, it is most fitting to name this award in Brian's honor.

The 2009 winner of the Brian Campbell Innovation Award is Dr. Joseph Enning of Mr. Wash Auto-Service. To many in the industry, Dr. Enning is a living legend. A native of Germany, he was working for a German company in New York when he developed the idea of opening what would be his country’s first professional car wash – in 1964. He opened at 11 a.m. that day, washed 600 cars by sun down and he has never looked back. In less than 15 years he had 15 washes in Germany and then later built and acquired 13 in the United States.

Dr. Enning’s innovations in design, process and technology are why the Association recognizes him with the Brian Campbell Innovation Award. Dr. Enning was unable to be present during the Expo and the award was accepted by his son Richard on his behalf.

Association Leadership Award
The Association Leadership Award recognizes someone who has gone above and beyond in their service to the International Carwash Association.

This year, Laurie Sherman of Blendco Systems, LLC was presented with the Association Leadership Award. Laurie served five years on the Association’s board of directors including two terms as vendor vice president. Laurie has been a valuable member of the Association’s Research Advisory Committee, and this past year was a key leader in the development of the Association’s chemical safety policy in the identification of educational and safety resources to be made available to car wash operators as a result.

Environmental Leadership Award
The Association introduced a new award at the Expo this year, the Environmental Leadership Award. This award is presented to a person responsible for increasing the positive recognition of the car wash industry for environmental stewardship.

The innagural award was presented to Bill Sartor of Quality Car Wash. Bill was instrumental in the development of programs that have saved his city of San Antonio more than three billion gallons of fresh water. Included was a car wash certification program that has become a model for towns and cities across the United States and abroad. Bill’s work has helped educate water regulators and other governmental authorities that professional car washing is the greenest way to wash a car. Along the way, he has led the Association in developing research and data that have helped car washes reduce water use and discharge costs, and remain open during times of drought.

2009 Most Valuable Carwasher Award
Presented during the State of the Industry Address, Professional Carwashing & Detailing magazine's 2009 Most Valuable Carwasher Award was awarded to Trudy Carlton of Car Pool LLC. Presenting the award was Kate Carr, editor in chief of the magazine.

Trudy is the head cashier at one of Car Pool’s seven locations in the Richmond, Virginia area, but more importantly, she is what co-workers and customers refer to as the “heart” of Car Pool. Over the last 23 years, Trudy has developed meaningful and long-lasting relationships with her customers and co-workers, some of whom consider her not only the heart, but the “Mom” of Car Pool.
